Golf Getaways: Keep your swing for next spring

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

Golf getaways are a great group trip any time, but when your home course is closed for the season, they’re even better. Golfing in the offseason is almost as sweet as an ice-cold beverage and hot dog at the turn. Luckily for golfers everywhere, affordable flights to your favorite course are just a few clicks away.

Lookout Mountain, Phoenix, AZ
Lookout Mountain, Phoenix, AZ

With more than 200 golf courses in the area, Phoenix is a golf lover’s dream with courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, other top designers, and World Golf Hall of Famers. Many resorts have their own courses on the property, so be sure to see if your hotel offers pre-reserved tee times for guests. There are also many public courses with less expensive greens fees. Just make sure to book your tee time a few weeks in advance of your trip.

Just two and a half hours south of the most prestigious golf course in the world, Augusta National, Savannah, GA is home to 18 beautiful public golf courses in the 15-mile radius of the city. Golfers headed to Savannah can expect historic charm and lush greens. In addition, Hilton Head Island is home to some of the country's leading championship golf courses and has the distinction of being one of the world's top golf communities. Plus, it’s only 45 minutes away from the Savannah/Hilton Head airport.

Originally made famous as a hotspot for Hollywood stars, the greater Palm Springs area is now a haven for sun lovers, outdoor adventurers, spa-goers, and, of course, golf enthusiasts. With over 100 courses to play in the greater Palm Springs area, visitors will have no shortage of choice. Many of the resorts in the area have courses on the property or offer discounts at nearby courses to their guests. Enjoy golf under the shade of the palm trees in Palm Springs.

Fort Myers Florida

There are almost 150 golf courses in Southwest Florida, including the Fort Myers area, and that’s more per capita than anywhere else in the U.S. With a warm and temperate climate that allows for year-round play, it’s no wonder golfers love the area. Most resorts either have their own home course or are affiliated with a specific course. Keep your eyes open on the course for alligators and crocodiles!

With more than 10 courses in this particular area on the island, Punta Cana has become one of the best places for golfing in the Caribbean. Many resorts offer golf packages or complimentary greens fees with their all-inclusive plan so, if golf is your game, you’re sure to win. The Majestic Mirage and Barcelo Barave Beach are just two of the many resorts to check out. The Majestic Mirage is great thanks to its unlimited green fees for guests and has the option of staying on the family side of the resort, or the adult-only side. The Barcelo is an adults-only, beach-front resort with spacious rooms. National Geographic and Tripadvisor listed Barcelo Beach as one of the top 10 beaches in the world to visit.

If you prefer Cancun over Punta Cana, Majestic Costa Mujeres and Dreams Vista Cancun Golf and Spa are two options to check out. The best nightlife in Mexico and perhaps all of the Caribbean is found in Cancun. Here, you’ll find plenty of bars and nightclubs to enjoy after your rounds of golf. In addition to the post-round fun, Cancun has perfect golfing weather in the winter months with an average daily temperature of 80 degrees. Similar to the Majestic Mirage, Majestic Costa Mujeres offers options for families with and without kids. Guests can enjoy playing golf at Puerto Cancun Golf Course, located only 15-minutes away from the resort and will experience a unique blend of nature paired with magnificent ocean views, mangroves, and canals. Dreams Vista Cancun Golf and Spa is perfectly set in the exclusive gated community of Puerta del Mar and has amazing views of the Caribbean Sean and Isla Mujeres. This family-friendly resort is perfect for golfers of all abilities.

Last, a vacation to Los Cabos is perfect for sun and sand lovers. With a desert climate boasting 300+ days of sunshine per year; wide, walkable beaches; some of the most highly acclaimed golf courses in North America; and stunning all-inclusive resorts, Los Cabos meets all the requirements for an amazing vacation to Mexico. Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort & Spa and Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos Golf & Spa are two of our top choices to stay and golf. Like Dreams Vista Cancun, Dreams Los Cabos is a family-friendly resort with plenty of activities for all guests. Guests of the Grand Fiesta Americana can purchase a golf package with their booking. The package includes up to two rounds of golf per stay on any of the three renowned Questro Golf Courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent II, Greg Norman, or Tom Weiskopf.

Regardless of where you prefer to travel, the southeast, the southwest, or even internationally, stellar golf courses and the accompanying resorts are never far away, and with Sun Country, the process of booking those trips is even easier.
